If you do a lot of lawn care and maintenance, you probably have a number of tools in your arsenal to get the job done right. One tool that you may have sitting in the corner or your shed or garage that comes in handy once in awhile is a roller. While this is not the most common of lawn related tools, you can use a lawn roller to help get new grass seed on its way and to make your lawn look smooth and professionally maintained, so it may be worth getting one.

But do manual rollers work well enough to make them worthwhile? That depends. The benefits of using a roller on your lawn are based on the weight of the drum on the end of the roller and how well that weight can smooth out the lawn below. The heavier the roller, the more likely it can do a good job of compacting the soil below. With that said, it makes sense that a manual model will typically be lighter in weight than a roller that is attached to a mower or tractor and can be pulled along by the machine to do the job.

Having a lighter-weight model doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means that it can’t be as effective in flatting out very uneven soil because it just doesn’t have the weight and leverage to flatten it out as well. It’s perfect for the occasional bump or bulge in the lawn, or to get your grass seed initially established, and since that is what most homeowners use it for, then a manual model can serve its purpose well.

Find out more about the Precision Products PLR1836 18-by-36-Inch Lawn Roller at Amazon now!

So, when it comes to lawn care, rollers definitely have their place in the process and a manual model can typically do the job for which it is intended. But if you have a very large space to handle, or a very uneven one, it is worth pulling out the big guns and renting an automatic model.

Lawnmowers are a gardener’s best friend, taking the work out of keeping your lawn in perfect condition. Unfortunately problems can often arise with all types of mowers. Luckily, most problems can be sorted pretty quickly, and at little expense. If you have not used your mower for a while, especially over the winter months and you find it will not start up, then if it is electric, you should first check there is power going to the mower. It could be just a blown fuse in the plug. If there is power, then check that the blades are turning freely. Most electric mowers have a thermal cut off switch, and if the blades are not turning it may be overheating and causing the fault.

For petrol mowers you should check there is enough fuel in the tank if it will not start up. Also check for dirt or debris in the fuel tank, this could be blocking the fuel filter. If this is the problem you will need to drain the fuel tank and replace the filter. Mower fuel filters are inexpensive and can be bought from home stores like argos extra, or from your local garden centre. Alternatively it may just be a case of the fuel valve not being in the “on” position, so check this first.

If you find the mower is not cutting the grass then check the blade height. You can adjust the height, so make sure the blades are low enough to meet the grass. The blades may be blunt, so sharpen them, remembering to turn off the power supply before you try to take them out. A useful tip to stop them turning as you work with them is to place a piece of wood between them. If the grass is too long then this could be causing the blades to malfunction. This is a common problem if the lawn has been left untreated for a long time. You may need to use a strimmer to get the grass to a manageable length before cutting with the mower. Also check that the underside of the mower is not clogged up, this can cause the blades to miss the cut. If new blades are needed then try the additions catalogue, making sure you know the make and model of the mower beforehand.

If you notice uneven cutting then make sure the blades are not twisted or damaged in any way. There could be something blocking them that just needs clearing. If you notice black smoke coming from the back of the mower, then check the air and oil filters first. If the oil level is too high then this could be the cause of the black smoke. Another potential reason for this is the fuel mixture adjustment screw. Try turning it one way and see what happens. If the problem gets worse then turn it the other way. If you follow these tips you should be able to fix and diagnose most of the common lawnmower faults.

When it comes to lawn maintenance and care, most people know the basics: mowing, fertilizing, and watering. However, one may not know about another important lawn maintenance process, aerating the soil. Lawn aeration is another vital step in keeping your outdoors lawn healthy, vibrant, and lush.

What exactly is soil aeration? Soil can become compacted for a variety of reasons. It can happen from high foot traffic, and even from repeated grass cuttings. Thatch or dead grass can fall to the bottom layer, giving the grass a dry or brownish appearance. When soil becomes compacted, it has a number of negative outcomes. The roots of the grass have to work their way deep within the ground in order to absorb nutrients. If the grass roots are not able to push deep enough into the dirt, they cannot absorb the nutrients needed to keep the grass alive and healthy. If you cut into the soil with a hunting knife, and you find tightly compacted clay-like soil, you probably have a good area of yard for aerating.

Proper circulation is a very important process. Without air, decomposition cannot take place, which can cause thatch and give grass an unhealthy and unsightly appearance. By aerating soil, fertilization becomes maximized. This happens by giving the fertilizer a direct channel to the roots.

There are three different tools used to aerate soil, the spike, slice and plug. The spike tools stab into the ground and make holes. These holes allow air circulation and help with the fertilization process. However, a draw back is that the ground is still being compacted in this process by the spike itself. The slice process cuts into the dirt like a knife and slices it. Plugs work in a similar fashion to the spike, except they actually pull out the soil instead of compacting it. The plugs sink about two to three inches into the dirt, thereby making it looser, less dense, and ready to absorb fertilizer. There are different machines available for the aeration of soil. Whatever method one chooses, there are two different machines that can be used. There is a tow behind, or a walk behind. A tow behind aerator is attached to a motorized tractor. This method is particularly efficient if the lawn is large. A walk behind is a gas fueled motorized machine similar to a lawn mower. Both the walk behind and the tow tools have platforms where weight can be added, this will aid in the efficiency of the penetration.

Find out more about the Swisher 11933 40-Inch-Wide Drum-Style Spike Aerator from Amazon now!

The best time to aerate the soil is shortly after a light rain, when the dirt is moist. The soil should not be muddy, but it should not be dry either. Dry soil will limit the penetration of the plugs, spikes, or slice tools.

One can purchase or rent an aerator from the local home improvement store. Many of these stores also have aerators for rent. On the other hand, there are also lawn care professionals who can do this job as well.

If your yard is not fenced, you can keep your small dog from wandering off while you work with the help of a dog playpen.

Keep in mind this essential step in lawn care. Soil aeration will keep one’s lawn healthy and vibrant, making the lawn a beautiful place to spend time.

If you are looking to buy a new lawnmower then you will need to decide both which type to choose and the power source you prefer. The basic types to choose from include rotary lawnmowers, cylinder lawnmowers and hover lawnmowers. Power sources are electric, either corded or cordless and petrol. We’ll look at both the different types and the power sources to find out the advantages and disadvantages of each so that you can make an informed decision.

Rotary Lawnmowers have a motor which drives cutting blades that rotate through 360 degrees cutting the grass as they rotate. The action is similar to that of a scythe. For long grass and overgrown vegetation they can be very good as the slashing motion can cut down even the longest grass. Rotary mowers tend to be cheaper than cylinder mowers and often lighter with sometimes rear rollers and a collection box for the grass. The rear roller is used to make the familiar stripe on the lawn. One disadvantage of a rotary mower is that the grass may be unevenly cut as the grass is not held all in the same orientation and the slashing motion is uneven.

Cylinder mowers are based on the original lawnmower designs developed as long ago as the nineteenth century. A spinning blade is fixed above the cutting blade which is held in a horizontal position. As the cylinder spins it causes the grass onto the blade where is it sheared off. The cut is much more even than that produced by the rotary mower and the grass trimmed in a much more even fashion. For places where this is important such as golf courses or tennis courts this is the type of mower that is used. However there are some diadvantages to cylinder mowers as they tend to be heavier and they are more expensive. They may also be harder to use due to their heavier weight.

Hover mowers are very popular and are essentially the same as a rotary mower except they have a turbine which causes a downward draft of air giving the ‘hover’ effect. Hover lawnmowers are very good on uneven ground and slopes and are light and easy to manoeuver. They can also be used effectively on long or thick grass which some other mowers would not be able to tackle. They cannot be used to collect the grass clippings however so you may need to rake the grass after mowing and the cut they give is not as even as cylinder mowers.

Power Source

Lawnmowers can also be purchased with either petrol or electrical engines with corded or cordless alternatives. Electric lawnmowers are becoming increasingly popular as they are light, environmentally friendly and cheap er than gas mowers to run. If you don’t want the restraints of trailing a cord a cordless lawnmower is now a real alternative as the batteries have improved considerably in the past few years. Batteries now can be recharged in about an hour and can tackle quite a large area between recharges. Electric mowers are much easier to maintain than petrol mowers but if you want a riding mower or a lawn tractor, petrol mowers are generally the only choice.

Each homeowner wants to have the best looking lawn and will use all the available tools to maintain their lawn. So many people assume incorrectly that only a professional landscaper can create a great looking garden. This is not true at all. Hiring a professional will definitely ease your work, but you can have a beautiful lawn without the help of a professional, as well.

Though there is no shortage of lawn maintenence equipment, there are a few that are critical for the general maintenence of a good looking lawn. If you dont't need these tools, lawn care would simply be impossible. Some of these crucial tools are lawnmowers, rakes, aerators and shears.

Aerators are also quite important for lawn health because they create cavities, holes on the top layer of the soil. This enables the soil to move better. Because or aeration water and vitamins get into the soil and reach the lawns roots. But this is not all, is increases the oxygen levels in the soil and thus helps the roots to be stronger.

Lawnmowers have great utility in giving a neat and tidy look to the blades of the grass. Since it trims the dead grass and helps in the growth of healthy grass, it provides a great service to your lawn. Even if you have decided not to buy a lot of tools for lawn care, lawnmower is an item that is practically indispensable when it comes to lawn care.

Shears are a type of tool that is used to maintain the hedges of the lawn by cutting and trimming it as necessary. If you have a creative streak in you, then you can even design your hedges according to your fancy with the help of shears. Therefore, it is a quite important tool for your home lawn and garden.

Apart from all the tools mentioned above, rakes are the tools that play a great role in the health of your lawn. With the help of rakes, you can remove the leaves from your Los Altos garden. This is an important task as leaf pile-up will not let water and sunlight reach your grass and thereby the grass could ultimately wither away and die.

Finding these tools should not be difficult as any home hardware store or local home improvement store will stock these important tools. So, if you use these tools for maintaining your lawn, there is no reason why you should not have a glowing and healthy garden throughout the year and that too, without the assistance of professionals who specialize in metal landscape edging.

If your lawn is not looking as green as you wish it may be time to consider some different lawn treatments including the use of herbicides and ensuring that you apply fertilizer on a regular basis.

Lawn Fertilizer

We do not advise using fertilizer with a very high nitrogen level as this often will result in the grass growing more quickly but with a inadequate root structure. A superior fertilizer will have a correct balance between nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and help the grass to grow strong, long roots. Organic lawn fertilizers slowly release nutrients into the soil, don’t result in over application which leads to brown spots and gives continuing release of all the needed nutrients which is a good deal better for your lawn.

It is not a good plan to use weed control products haphazardly all over the lawn as this only adds chemicals to the environment and is unwarranted. Buy a weed killer that is labeled as safe to use on lawns and use it as a spot weed killer only. Use a spray and direct at the weeds, not spraying around in other places. In April or May it’s a good idea to use fungus and insect control.

Grub worms (the larvae of June bugs) can be a problem in many areas and can cause brown spots to develop on your lawn. They can easily be dealt with by the use of a granular insecticide that is applied to the lawn and watered in. They can be prevented by using insecticide earlier on in the year.

If you have moss on your lawn have a look at How To Get Rid Of Moss In Your Lawn for some more advice.

A healthy, thick lawn will be able to endure infestations of bugs a good deal better than a thin, unhealthy lawn! Stick to these lawn tips for a healthy lawn you are proud of.

Pocket gophers are rodents, medium to small in size, which burrow, spending 99% of their lifespan in underground tunnels and nests. Gophers have external fur-lined cheek pouches located on the outside of their mouths in which they store food which is brought to the nest in order to feed their young. There are many different species of pocket gophers in North America. They are powerful diggers, have front paws with large claws which make them the enemy of many home owners with well manicured lawns. The pocket gopher is well suited for digging holes and tunnels because the generally live underground, and when over populated, pocket gophers become difficult to control.

Pocket gophers eat roots of grass, forbs, shrubs, and even someitmes small trees. They can be very destructive for forest plantations. Actually, every year the US Forestry Service contract out work to manage pocket gophers in order to safeguard newly planted tree seedlings. These animals are herbivores, loving to eat all manner of plants in yards, lawns, gardens, and flowerbeds. The burrow systems they dig ave many different braches and individual gophers tend to be quite territorial. During studies in California, where radio collars were placed on gophers, some gophers were tracked moving 200-300 ft per night. A single gopher might dig up 250 mounds a year, moving up to 4 tons of soil within weeks. Burrows constalty change and evolve, with some tunnels sealed off and new ones created. How many feet of tunnels are created? No one can really say but gophers cause serious damage for property owners.

Pocket gophers work year round, during the winter, the summer, even during heavy snow fall. In alfalfa fields, gophers are often watched feeding above ground. On the whole, gophers move through their tunnel sustem and eat the dangling roots. An simple way to figure out if a pocket gopher occupies a tunnel system is to simply dig open the tunnel. If gophers are active then they will fill in that hole, in this case, you have gophers.

Gophers are one of the most difficult to manage in the U.S. EPA approved baits and traps are generally used to reduce potential impact gophers may have on the environment. Some bait includes the following active ingredients: strychnine, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and zinc phosphide. t. However, because of the length of the tunnel systems, such fumigants may not be very effective.

In winter you need to make sure that there is no young growth on your lawn as this will make it more susceptible to disease. To do this gradually lower the cutting height of your mower until you are almost shaving the lawn. Do this in steps over a few weeks as you do not want to suddenly remove all the leaf tissue or cause damage to the turf.

Apply fertiliser to your lawn in the late fall. Although this will not be used during the slow growth of the winter it will be stored in the roots and be immediately available for use by the grass in the Spring as new growth begins.

Remove any debris from the lawn before the first snowfall. This includes leaves, logs, equipment, pots etc. If left in place when it snows they will smother the grass under the blanket of snow and cause damage which will make the lawn vulnerable to disease.

Before the first frost aerate the lawn to prevent thatch from increasing during the winter and to prepare the lawn for new growth in the Spring.

With care your lawn will survive the winter in good shape and be healthy and green with new growth in the Spring.

A healthy lawn which is naturally resisitant to diseases, insects and weeds will be much less dependant on chemical fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides. In addition a healthy lawn will only need fertilising once year. So how do you make sure your lawn is healthy so that you can reduce the use of fertilisers and chemicals. The first thing to consider is how to improve the soil. Start by testing the pH of the soil which should be slightly acidic and between 6.5 and 7. It is more acidic (the pH is less than 6.5) you would need to add some lime. If the pH is above seven, the soil is too basic and you need to add some sulfur. You can either use a pH meter to comply for around $50 or have the soil professionally tested.

Loamy soils with a mix of silt, sand and clay are the best for lawns. Soils that contain a lot of clay can become compacted which will prevent nutrients and air flowing properly. Heavy use can also compact the soil which will then need aerating. This is a process for small plugs are lifted from the make and spaces which allow better flow through off nutrients, water and air. If you do not have an aerator you can usually rent one easily. Aerating should be done before fertilizing or top dressing. you can also improve the quality of the soil by adding organic matter such as grass clippings or compost. This is especially useful for heavy, clay soils but it can also benefit sandy soils by increasing the humus content which helps to retain in nutrients and water.

The type of grass you choose for your lawn is also important and it’s best to choose a grass adapted to your local conditions. The amount of nutrients and water required varies considerably between different types of grasses as does the amount of wear and shade that can be tolerated. Your local garden center would be able to recommend the type of grass suitable for the area in which you live.

When you mow your lawn do not cut it too short as this will expose surface roots and lead to the soil drying out quickly and reduce the surface aeration.A general rule to follow is not to cut more than one third of the length of the grass at any time. The ideal length for most species is between 2 1/2 in 3 1/2 inches. It is best to water thoroughly but infrequently as this will lead to better development of a deep root system which will help the lawn to become hard and drought resistant. Always allow the lawn to dry out in between watering. It is time to water the lawn when the color is a dullish gray and footprint stays for longer than a few seconds. To check if you have added enough water you can add a small container close to the sprinkler. It should collect about an inch of water. If possible always water in the early morning as less water will evaporate and late in the day. It is better to water into sections, water half an inch then leave for half an hour and then water another half an inch.

With care you can have a heathy lawn that is able to resist short periods of drought and will look green and healthy all through the year.
