Although many gardeners love the idea of being at one with nature, unfortunately there is a lot of harm that can be caused by gardeners. They might not even realize they are causing harm to the environment. If you want to be more eco-aware then please continue reading.

Don’t Buy Compost With Peat – Peat bogs really need to be conserved and if you are using compost with peat in it you are partly responsible for them disappearing. Instead you should buy peat-free or even better, make your own compost. Apart from meat and fish, you can add in vegetable peelings, fruit, lawn and hedge cuttings, cardboard, sawdust and much more besides. In about a year you will have great compost for using in the garden.

Don’t Use Slug Pellets – You might want to protect your plants from slugs but the problem is that these pellets can indirectly be eaten by birds and other animals. The birds eat the slugs that have eaten the pellets, if the birds eat enough slugs it can kill them too.

Re-Use Rain Water – As we know, gardens require a lot of water. This is fine if you live in an area where there is plenty of water all year round, however if there are any dry spells you will find that there are limits on how much water you are allowed to use. Many places enforce a hose-pipe ban. So what do you do in these situations? Well, luckily you can buy a water butt to collect rain water. This way you have your own supply of water for the garden.

Grow Appropriate Plants - Some parts of the world are really suffering from droughts and if you live in one of these areas you should try to grow plants that thrive in dry climates. Succulents and herbs should both be considered.

As you can see, the above tips are very simple to enforce yet can make a pretty big difference to the environment.

Find out more about what goes on in the compost pile at Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration in the Compost Pile

Does the tire pollute the soil and there fore the vegetables? I it is bad to burn tires.. Should I be concerned about the quality of the vegetables? Have you seen any scientific evidence about this topic? Or environmental tests?
