If you do a lot of lawn care and maintenance, you probably have a number of tools in your arsenal to get the job done right. One tool that you may have sitting in the corner or your shed or garage that comes in handy once in awhile is a roller. While this is not the most common of lawn related tools, you can use a lawn roller to help get new grass seed on its way and to make your lawn look smooth and professionally maintained, so it may be worth getting one.

But do manual rollers work well enough to make them worthwhile? That depends. The benefits of using a roller on your lawn are based on the weight of the drum on the end of the roller and how well that weight can smooth out the lawn below. The heavier the roller, the more likely it can do a good job of compacting the soil below. With that said, it makes sense that a manual model will typically be lighter in weight than a roller that is attached to a mower or tractor and can be pulled along by the machine to do the job.

Having a lighter-weight model doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means that it can’t be as effective in flatting out very uneven soil because it just doesn’t have the weight and leverage to flatten it out as well. It’s perfect for the occasional bump or bulge in the lawn, or to get your grass seed initially established, and since that is what most homeowners use it for, then a manual model can serve its purpose well.

Find out more about the Precision Products PLR1836 18-by-36-Inch Lawn Roller at Amazon now!

So, when it comes to lawn care, rollers definitely have their place in the process and a manual model can typically do the job for which it is intended. But if you have a very large space to handle, or a very uneven one, it is worth pulling out the big guns and renting an automatic model.

When it comes to lawn maintenance and care, most people know the basics: mowing, fertilizing, and watering. However, one may not know about another important lawn maintenance process, aerating the soil. Lawn aeration is another vital step in keeping your outdoors lawn healthy, vibrant, and lush.

What exactly is soil aeration? Soil can become compacted for a variety of reasons. It can happen from high foot traffic, and even from repeated grass cuttings. Thatch or dead grass can fall to the bottom layer, giving the grass a dry or brownish appearance. When soil becomes compacted, it has a number of negative outcomes. The roots of the grass have to work their way deep within the ground in order to absorb nutrients. If the grass roots are not able to push deep enough into the dirt, they cannot absorb the nutrients needed to keep the grass alive and healthy. If you cut into the soil with a hunting knife, and you find tightly compacted clay-like soil, you probably have a good area of yard for aerating.

Proper circulation is a very important process. Without air, decomposition cannot take place, which can cause thatch and give grass an unhealthy and unsightly appearance. By aerating soil, fertilization becomes maximized. This happens by giving the fertilizer a direct channel to the roots.

There are three different tools used to aerate soil, the spike, slice and plug. The spike tools stab into the ground and make holes. These holes allow air circulation and help with the fertilization process. However, a draw back is that the ground is still being compacted in this process by the spike itself. The slice process cuts into the dirt like a knife and slices it. Plugs work in a similar fashion to the spike, except they actually pull out the soil instead of compacting it. The plugs sink about two to three inches into the dirt, thereby making it looser, less dense, and ready to absorb fertilizer. There are different machines available for the aeration of soil. Whatever method one chooses, there are two different machines that can be used. There is a tow behind, or a walk behind. A tow behind aerator is attached to a motorized tractor. This method is particularly efficient if the lawn is large. A walk behind is a gas fueled motorized machine similar to a lawn mower. Both the walk behind and the tow tools have platforms where weight can be added, this will aid in the efficiency of the penetration.

Find out more about the Swisher 11933 40-Inch-Wide Drum-Style Spike Aerator from Amazon now!

The best time to aerate the soil is shortly after a light rain, when the dirt is moist. The soil should not be muddy, but it should not be dry either. Dry soil will limit the penetration of the plugs, spikes, or slice tools.

One can purchase or rent an aerator from the local home improvement store. Many of these stores also have aerators for rent. On the other hand, there are also lawn care professionals who can do this job as well.

If your yard is not fenced, you can keep your small dog from wandering off while you work with the help of a dog playpen.

Keep in mind this essential step in lawn care. Soil aeration will keep one’s lawn healthy and vibrant, making the lawn a beautiful place to spend time.

Power dethatchers are used to decrease lawn thatch, the layer of organic materials (leaves, pine needles and cut grass) that collect together on top of the dirt surface. A little bit of thatch is good for the grass, but once it gets over an inch thick, it can begin to affect the flow of air, water and nutrients to the grass roots. Too much thatch, around 3” deep, creates a barrier that keeps the necessary things for healthy growing grass from going to the roots, including fertilizers and other lawn care products.

Power dethatchers have several adjustable blades along the bottom that remove thatch as the machine is moved along the turf. Blades are spaced farther apart for more delicate grasses and closer together for the hardier grasses. Blade height can be set to dig into the soil and rip the thatch out. This is the best way to get through a thick layer of thatch, but it does pull up grass plants too. The lawn will look sparse for a while until the grass recovers. Setting the blades higher so they slice into the thatch rather than pull it out is easier on the grass. Usually that will be enough if the thatch is less than 3” thick.

The thatch depth can be checked by removing a soil plug from the lawn and measuring the thatch. If it is between 1”-3”, using a power dethatcher is a good idea. Generally, it is best to dethatch in the early spring when the ground isn’t too dry or too wet. Mow the grass shorter than normal and water it the night before. Plan ahead to rent the dethatcher (for around $65 for a half-day) since they are popular to rent during the best times to use them. Start dethatching and then stop to make sure the blades are working correctly and are set at the proper height and width apart. Dethatch in parallel rows along the length of the lawn and then go a second time in shorter rows along the width to remove more of the thatch.

People love to have great looking lawns and grass areas, but sometimes they absolutely dread having to cut the lawn. Grass can grow at quite a fast rate and therefore it needs to be cut on a regular basis. Without a good and reliable lawnmower, the grass may become overgrown or look messy. So, if you do have the right one, it can make the dreaded job a lot easier for yourself.

Types of Lawnmowers Available

There are quite a few different types of lawnmowers out there and people will have an argument of both good and bad for all of them. A lot of people like and prefer the electric lawnmowers over the gasoline powered ones.

The benefits of having a good working lawnmower are clear to see. If your lawnmower is getting old, it may start to miss patches of grass or it might not cut as well as it used to. Also, some older lawnmowers have a tendency to cut out or take a while to get started. That is why it is important to have a good lawnmower to ensure the grass gets cut properly. Another thing to consider is the fact that the lawn will not look good if the grass hasn’t been cut straight and properly, so a good lawnmower will help to keep them looking trim and proper.

What Should You Consider When Buying a New Lawnmower?

There are a few different aspects that you may need to consider if you either need to replace an old lawnmower or you just don’t have one but you need one. Firstly you will need to see how big your lawn is and then decide if you think an electric one would be good enough to do the job. They are cheaper to run compared to the gasoline ones and they can also be more reliable.

The problem with an electric lawnmower is that it is powered up by a cable so it will only go so far. With a gasoline lawnmower it can go as far as you want it to, but it can be extremely noisy and it can also be more pollutant too. Also, you need to consider your budget and see how much you are willing to spend on one. It is best to shop around and get the best one you can find for your budget. You want a lawnmower that is going to do a great job and that is reliable. If you get a decent quality one, it should last a lot longer and therefore it would be worth spending the extra money on it.

Looking after your lawnmower is essential when it comes to taking care of your lawn.

Looking after the lawn is something that should be a high priority for many people, but there is more to looking after a lawn than just using a lawnmower. Although using a lawnmower will keep it healthy, if the lawnmower is not up to standard or looked after properly then how can you expect to get full results from it?

There are some lawnmower tips that can prove useful when it comes to looking after your lawnmower. It is a good idea to take the tips on board in order to gain a better understanding and also to become more knowledgeable about lawnmower care. This helps to ensure that your lawn gets the treatment that is deserves.

Lawnmower Care Tips

There are different types of lawnmowers out there, but if you use a gas powered one then you should always make sure that it is using a fresh supply of gas. This is a critical thing to consider because it helps with the performance of the engine. As well as this, you should also make sure that you check the oil in the engine at the same time. When it comes to draining the oil, you need to replace it with clean oil after about 50 hours of using the lawnmower.

Another tip you will need to take on board is replacing the spark plug, as this helps to properly look after your lawnmower and to ensure that it will work properly when it comes to cutting the lawn. You should also consider looking after the air filter of the lawnmower, so if it becomes clogged up or dirty then you should try and sort this problem out. If you don’t it will affect the way that the engine runs and it could even cause damage to the lawnmower itself. It is a good idea to get the filter serviced after it has been operated for about 25 hours. It is quite simple to do this as you take out the cartridge from the air filter and then just tap it gently on a flat surface of any kind.

You will know if the filter is dirty as the dirt will fall out of it and you may have to get a new one for your lawnmower. As well as the filter, something else that is important is the state of the lawnmower blades. You should apply the right care to the blades as this will help with the overall performance when it comes to mowing the lawn. To do this you need to ensure that the blades are always kept as sharp as possible but do not sharpen them whilst they are still in the lawnmower.

You should take all of these care tips into consideration when it comes to your lawnmower so that you get the best performance possible and you have a lawn to be proud of.

After changing the oil, the spark plug, the gas, the air filter, & sharpening the blade, the lawnmower is still sputtering. I noticed that when I take out the spark plug, it is VERY dirty as if it is burning instead of firing. When I clean it, the lawnmower fires up VERY strong…for about 5 seconds before it goes back to sputtering. Should I change the spark plug cable? I read somewhere about contacts needing to be cleaned. Might that be the problem? Any help would be appreciated.
