Natural Gardening with Rain Barrels

For those who are into natural gardening, rain barrels can prove to be a very important and wonderful tool for them.  Not only do they prevent runoff but they help them to save water for their garden and add a more rustic feel to the landscaping of it.

Generally water is funnelled into rain barrels via plastic or metal downspouts.  However, these look a little awkward and can detract some of the beauty of your home.  If you would like to ensure that you keep your rustic rain barrel looking pleasant why not instead install rain chains instead.

Rain chains for rain barrels hang from the corners of the roof and then guide the water flowing from it to be caught in the barrel below.  For many hundreds of years these have been used in Japan to harvest rainwater exactly the same way as more traditional downspouts do.  However visually they are much more pleasing to the eye as you see the rain water flowing and swirling down them.  Not only will you find this motion very pleasing but it makes things feel far more tranquil because you can hear the sound of the water flowing down the chains.

Most of the rain chains available and certainly the ones you see on houses in Japan are made up of series of metal cups which have been chained together.  In the bottom of each cup there is a hole and it is through which the water flows into the rain barrels or just on to the ground.  However, there are some types of where it is the chain links that span the system vertically that will help the water to flow down and into the rain barrel below.

One of the advantages of rain chains is that they in addition to looking beautiful on wet days they look just as pleasing when the weather is good.  Ideally you should be looking to purchase the rain chains which are made from copper because over time they develop a beautiful blue green patina to them.  This in turn further creates a very pleasing focal part to this area of your garden which would normally look extremely drab.

Although these are ideal for helping to direct the flow of water down into rain barrels, rain chains are not suitable to be used where the rain storms can be very severe.  Plus these are not suitable for helping to collect every drop of rain water; instead you would be far better of installing downspouts to connect to your rustic rain barrel.

For anyone who is considering installing rain barrels in their garden and wish to improve the visual beauty of their home, rain chains are something that should be considered seriously.
