How To Choose Garden Lighting

When it comes to garden lighting, there are literally hundreds of reasons why you might want to add them to your garden. They add a sense of mystery to your garden’s existing natural beauty. They can shed light on a quiet garden bench.

But perhaps most important, garden lights allow you to continue to enjoy your garden long after the sun has set.

Garden lighting has been an important part of human history for as long as we’ve been gardening and using light to find our way in the darkness. Why not combine the two? There are some people who argue that the only light a garden needs is the sun, but don’t let them stop you.

You have every right to continue to appreciate your garden after sunset!

Successful garden lighting plans almost always boil down to taking your time and not rushing into anything. You need to take a look at your garden after the sun has gone down and really think about what it is that you want your garden lights to do for you.

This can literally take hours! Pull up a lawn chair and pour yourself a cup of tea. How do the asters look at twilight? How do the sunflowers fare after dusk?

Do you find your gaze falling one particular element of your garden? Perhaps there is a dwarf apple tree that you want to be sure a ground spotlight shows off. Or maybe you want to try and replicate the effect of moonlight on your rose bushes.

Use flashlights – both big and little. Cast the beams around the garden. Try them from different sides and angles. What do you like? What feels like overkill?

Take your time and don’t rush. Go out on a couple of nights. Bring a friend over and ask them for their advice. Garden lights are not really a big deal to install, but it makes sense to get them right the first time you put them in.

And remember, when you are finished – you get to sit back and enjoy the real show!
