That title is a good example of metaphorically leading folk up the garden path since this article actually has nothing whatever to do with deception, but is rather more prosaically about quite literally leading the way along a garden path.

We’re talking garden lighting of course. Any fool can follow a path during the day, but without proper lighting it’s all too easy at night to stray into a bed of roses (or worse), with predictable and undesirable consequences on both sides. So what’s the answer?

Rather obviously, the best solution is path lights – however, there’s more than one way to light a path. Where all garden lighting is concerned, the choice is initially split between conventionally powered (using low voltage cables) and solar lights. Then there is the question of lighting type, which we’ll get to in a moment.

The solar versus electrical debate boils down to personal choice with regard to various factors. Solar is far easier to install and turns itself on and off in response to light levels. On the other hand it isn’t generally as bright (though this may not be an issue) and does require more maintenance since rechargeable batteries don’t last forever (or work well during winter months). Personally I prefer the extra brightness, manual on/off control and fit-and-forget approach, though I will admit that laying garden cabling is so far beyond tedious as to totally redefine the entire concept.

For lighting types, you have again two basic approaches, namely direct and indirect lighting. In the first case you either embed lights in the path itself or use down lights placed close enough to throw bright pools of light directly onto the path. For the second approach you install path markers (often bollards, pagodas or spikes) that indicate the route rather than illuminating the path per se.

For the embedded approach, you can either purchase ready made products (stepping stones with integral lights for example) or if using suitable materials (brick paving, wooden boards etc) you can retro fit LED deck lights which give a good effect.

Aside from being a functional enhancement and putting an end to evenings spoiled by falling in the fish pond (again), path lighting looks great too as it provides visual structure to the overall landscape lighting scheme.
