Lawn mowing tips for the perfect lawn

The most important factor in lawn care is correct mowing.  Mowing regularly and correctly will keep your lawn looking lush and green. Lawn care is continuously maintaining the mowing equipment, using the clippings as a lawn mulch on a regular basis, and knowing how to, and how often to, mow your lawn.

First of all, make sure your mower is well maintained, get in the habit of cleaning and oiling it after every use.  This is important whether you have an electric or a petrol lawnmower.  Keep the blades sharp as this will produce a much better cut.

A very good idea before starting to mow your lawn is to go over the lawn with a lawn rake.  This will remove anything that might damage your mower’s blades – or damage you as a stone could be thrown from the blades at high velocity and hit you with unpleasant consequences if you are using a walk behind mower.  If you are doing a favour for a neighbour or relative you should remember to check round for any obstacles that may not be apparent at first sight (for example, pipes near the surface or half buried rocks) as it is better to find them first, by eye than with your mower when you are cutting the grass!

Mow your lawn in a regular pattern.  Do not go round in circles or randomly sweep the mower across the grass, go backwards and forwards in lines whether you are using a push lawnmower or a ride on lawnmower.  Keep your pace just fast enough to avoid grass clogging the blades.  If you have to mow round a tree or other obstacle, go round it in one direction and then go round it again in the other and this will ensure a really neat cut.

It is important not to always cut your lawn in the same way.  Try to change directions each time you mow (whilst still keeping a regular pattern as above).  If you use a few different patterns, this will have the added benefit of dispersing any build up of clippings left on the lawn from the previous mowing.

As you walk up and down, always overlap the line you have just mown by half the width of your lawnmower’s cutting blades.  This will ensure that you cut any stray blades of grass you missed on the first pass and it will give a really, neat finish to your grass.
