Green Garden Fence Ideas

Garden fencing can be designed to be as green as the garden itself, and save money both in terms of materials and maintenance. Some cheaper garden fence designs actually look more appropriate than expensive ones made of composite materials or toxic coatings. These are a few garden fence ideas that are easy on the environment and your pocketbook.

Bamboo fences. Hardwoods and softwoods are technically renewable resources, but the lumber and pulp industries are cutting down forests beyond replacement rate. Bamboo, on the other hand, grows quickly and is in no danger of being consumed faster than it can be produced. Better still, it’s one of the cheapest type of fencing materials available, and requires virtually no maintenance, since it doesn’t need to be repainted or repaired.

Rusty iron fences. When homeowners consider decorative garden fencing, their first thought is usually a brand new wrought iron fence. But rusted iron fence panels salvaged from the local junkyard can be had at a fraction of the cost, tend to have a one-of-a-kind look; and they’re already rusted, so they don’t need to be weatherproof to prevent additional rust. If anything, older and rustier fences look even better than newer, slicker aluminum and iron fencing, especially when covered with vine.

Dry stone fences. It’s hard to get much cheaper and more sustainable than simple stone. You don’t even need mortar to hold a stone fence together, provided the stones are properly sized and laid. The materials are free, and maintenance is virtually a non-issue. If part of the fence needs replacing, it can be done without tools or any type of labor-intensive disassembly.

Recycled brick fences. Recycled brick is somewhat common to find in driveways, but it’s just as easy to use it for gardens. Unlike stone fences, mortar is required, but used brick is still far more inexpensive than new brick. Like rusted iron fences, since recycled brick already has a “lived-in” look, there’s less need to replace parts of it that chip. Recycled brick garden fencing has a distinguished character its own.
