How to choose the Best Outdoor Patio Heaters

Garden patio heaters are one of the best-selling items for the home right now and it’s easy to see why. Everyone enjoys being outside in the garden or on the patio and patio heaters can extend the time that you can do this. You will not be restricted to using your garden only in the summer months but in the spring and fall when the evenings are cooler you can warm your patio and still enjoy the outside. Another reason why patio heaters are selling so well is that many establishments have had to provide somewhere outside for their guests to smoke!

So you’ve decided to buy a patio heater and need to do some research on the type, size and type of fuel that would be best for you. We’ve put some information together to help you to do this.

Types of Garden Patio Heaters

Patio heaters can be bought in three general types, permanent, portable and free standing. Permanent patio heaters produce the most heat but the most popular is a free standing gas model as it is very easy to use and versatile. Check to see that there is a variable heat control as some have only a high and low setting which is not very flexible. You also need to check power output as this can vary considerably between models. Some table models have a low output so will not provide much heat. Standing models the most popular but permanent models, as we said earlier, produce the most heat. Of course, you also need to take account of the fact that the more heat it produces the more it will cost to run the patio heater.

Safety

Most newer models of patio heaters have a flame failure device. You should also look for model that has an anti-tilt device which will shut off the fuel supply if is over turned. Of course it is not a good idea to place the patio heater on a slope where it can easily be knocked over. Place it on level ground away from anything that could cause a fire.

Garden Patio Heater Finishes

The most popular finish for patio heaters is stainless steel which can be left outside and will not rust. Some models are powder coated in different colors and these should always be covered when left outside. Other finishes include a hammered finish which also does not rust easily and can be safely left outside.

Gas Fueled Patio Heaters

Some patio heaters are made to run on either butane or propane, and some only on a single fuel. It is a good idea to buy a dual model as, although butane is perfectly okay to use in the summer it is not so good when the weather is cooler when propane is more appropriate. Propane will work well at a lower temperature and give off more heat. A gas cylinder will generally last about 4 to 5 weeks of regular use.

Where to place Your Garden Patio Heater

Some things to think about when placing the garden patio heater is to realize that it needs lots of ventilation around it. If you use it inside a tent or similar you need to have at least 90 cm space around it and be sure to only use with flame retardant material. Always place a patio heater on a level surface. Make sure the hosing and fittings of the gas cylinder are in good condition, there are no leaks and the connections are not rusted before you use it. Do not place close to trees or fences or anywhere that could cause a fire.
