Copper Rain Chains
Rain chains downspouts were first used in ancient Japan where they are known as kusar doi. This ancient method of collecting rain from the roof has been transformed into a modern method to replace ugly downspouts with attractive rain chains. In Japan very large,decorative rain chains can be seen on temples and simpler ones are used on homes. Modern rain chains vary from simple metal chains to decorative copper rain chains in a wide variety of designs. Water travels gently down the chain to a collection point replacing the usual plastic downspout with a much more attractive feature.

Advantages of using a copper rain chain include protection from splashing and mud deposits on the exterior walls as the water flows down a rain chain much more gently. They look much better than plastic gutters and produce a pleasant sound as water gently flows down the chain. Even when it is not raining a gentle breeze through the rain chain will result in pleasant tinkling sounds.
Material and Designs of Rain Chains
Most rain chains are made from copper which is coated with shellac to provide protection from oxidation and preserve the coppery shine. Other materials used include aluminium, brass and plastic. Many different designs are available including flowers, birds, umbrellas, watering cans etc. Tulip rain chains and acorn rain chains are among the most popular. Cup shaped chains have holes in the base of each link to allow water to flow downwards. For situations where splashing needs to be eliminated completely, such as near a window or door choose a cup shaped version where the water flows through the funnel like shape through a hole in the base.
Place an object below the chain to catch the water. This could be a wooden barrel, ceramic jug or bowl or a pebble filled wooden box. You can then use the water for the garden.

Looking After Your Rain Chains
Many copper fountains and rain chains are coated with a protective layer that helps maintain their beauty over the years. This coating is a baked on enamel finish that will slow down oxidation of the copper so it will not turn green.
Coated Copper Rain Chains and Fountains
To maintain a fountain or copper rain chain that has been treated this way you should apply Turtle Wax Hard Shell every two months. For daily maintenance use a household furniture polish with a soft cloth. Do not allow any wax or polish to drip into the water as this could damage the pump. Also dry off any water droplets that accumulate as left for a long time this will cause damage to the copper finish. Copper cleaner should not be used on fountains or rain chains as it will damage the protective coating. If you live in a hard water area white spots may appear on the copper parts. They can be removed with calcium lime cleaner. Thoroughly rinse off the cleaner when you have finished and refill then restart the fountain.
Uncoated Copper Rain Chains and Fountains
Use a household furniture polish for daily maintenance. As for the coated finish do not allow water to stay on the copper for extended periods and never use a copper cleaner as this will remove the patina that has built up which enhances the look of the copper. For uncoated copper do not use wax or calcium lime cleaner as this too will remove the patina that was applied by the manufacturer.
