How do I get my lawnmower to stop sputtering?
After changing the oil, the spark plug, the gas, the air filter, & sharpening the blade, the lawnmower is still sputtering. I noticed that when I take out the spark plug, it is VERY dirty as if it is burning instead of firing. When I clean it, the lawnmower fires up VERY strong…for about 5 seconds before it goes back to sputtering. Should I change the spark plug cable? I read somewhere about contacts needing to be cleaned. Might that be the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

The plug wire could make it misfire but would not foul the plug. Have you changed the fuel filter? Or cleaned out the carburetor? Start there.
Let’s start with preventive maintenance…At the end of the season last year, did you drain the gas from the fuel tank? If not, your problem could be “bad” gas…Try some fresh gas…Make sure you have the right spark plug and the gap is set correctly…Does your mower have an in-line fuel filter? If so, that could be the problem…I would venture a guess and say that varnish build-up in the carb is the culprit…Try 2 tablespoons of fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank…If that doesn’t work, consult a professional for a complete tuneup or diagnosis
