Attracting Bluebirds to Your Garden
There are three species of bluebirds in the US, eastern, Western and Mountain bluebirds. Mountain bluebirds are found in the West at higher elevations, Western Bluebirds are found to the west of the Great Plains and Eastern Bluebirds on the Great Plains.
Bluebirds have vivid colours and a joyful song and are huge favorites with bird watchers. Populations of bluebirds drastically decreases throughout the previous 100 years, being ousted from their favorite nesting sites by sparrows and starlings.
Several clubs of lovers of wild birds have initiated different means to support the nesting and reproduction of bluebirds. In Missouri in the 1950’s the public made a National Bluebird Trail with in excess of 7000 bluebird boxes
Created in 1978 The North American Bluebird Society promotes the recovery of bluebirds. To help bluebirds you can set up a Bluebird Trail by setting up a series of bluebird boxes The perfect bluebird house has been recommended by the Bluebird Society and you could construct your own or buy a ready made bluebird house.
The best place for a Bluebird Trail is a rural location with thin undergrowth and scattered trees. There should be perch sites such as wires, tree branches or fences to allow the bluebirds to perch while looking for food. Sightings of bluebirds in southern areas indicate that they have come back to to this region. This has shown that bluebirds have benefited from the establishment of Bluebird Trails.
Locations suitable for a Bluebird Trail are remote locations of golf courses, parks and cemeteries where pesticides have not been applied. You should avoid heavily wooded areas with a lot of undergrowth. Bluebird boxes ought to be located 200 yards apart and be four to six feet high.
You can draw bluebirds to your garden by placing mealworms (which can be bought online) or raisins soaked in water on platform feeders. They will also be attracted to a heated birdbath in the winter.
