Types of Garden Patio Heaters
Garden patio heaters can be bought in three types, portable, free standing or permanent. Permanent patio heaters produce the most heat but the most popular is a free standing gas model as it is very easy to use and versatile. Look to see if the model you are buying has variable heat controls. Many only have two settings, high and low. The power output can vary a lot between models so make sure you check it carefully. Many of the table patio heaters available only have a low heat output. Portable models are the best selling types but permanent heaters have the highest heat output. Of course, you also need to take account of the fact that the more heat it produces the more it will cost to run the patio heater.
Patio Heater Safety
Most newer models of patio heaters have a flame failure device. You should also look for model that has an anti-tilt device which will shut off the fuel supply if is over turned. it is not a good idea of course to position your patio heater on a slope as it can easily be toppled over. Place it on level ground away from anything that could cause a fire.
Garden Patio Heater Finishes
The most popular are stainless steel patio heaters which can be left outside and will not rust. If you choose a powder coated model use a cover or take them inside when not in use or they will corrode. Hammered finishes look good and do not corrode easily so you can leave these models outside uncovered.
Gas Fuelled Patio Heaters
Some patio heaters are made to run on either butane or propane, and some only on a single fuel. Butane is OK for using on warmer evenings but propane is much better in the Fall or early Spring when the evening are cooler. Propane will work well at a lower temperature and give off more heat. A gas patio heater will generally run on a cylinder of gas for about 4 to 5 weeks of regular use.
Where to place Your Garden Patio Heater
Some things to think about when placing the garden patio heater is to realize that it needs lots of ventilation around it. If you use it inside a tent or similar you need to have at least 90 cm space around it and be sure to only use with flame retardant material. Always find somewhere level to place your patio heater. Always make sure there are no gas leaks and that the fittings have not corroded before you use the heater. Do not place close to trees or fences or anywhere that could cause a fire.
