How to Make a Container Garden

Beginner gardeners can create lovely mini gardens by making a container garden. You can fill window boxes with many types of small perennials, lovely shrub roses,  colorful pots of annuals or arrange climbing plants on trellises on your patio to welcome your visitors. This is such a simple way to create a garden either by arranging your pots in a group to give a showy effect or place just a single container with an especially nice plant on its own in a prominent position.

Color schemes can vary from using flowers of just one color to a mixture of colors. An especially nice effect is achieved by mixing flowers of one bright color, red or purple for instance with plants with pure white flowers. You should  think about the texture and shape of the leaves and contrast tall leaves with wider low growing leaves. Some flowers will have a long growing season but others will flower for a short while then die down and will need to be replaced.

A wide variety of containers can be used for your container garden so be creative. A copper urn or a porcelain bowl can look attractive or you could use a watering can, a barrel, terra-cotta pots or many other attractive containers. There are many attractive  pots you can buy at your local garden center that can be used for container gardening. Terra-cotta pots look very attractive but they do absorb water so need to be watched carefully to prevent your plants from drying out. You could also use sealer to  paint the interior parts to prevent moisture from evaporating. Also make sure you buy saucers that match your containers to catch any drips. While you’re at a garden center buy good potting mix to ensure excellent performance from your plants.

Attractive plant pots can be used on steps leading up to your front door, inside your hallway, in your kitchen and bathroom and anywhere around the house. Place your pots in different parts of your house and patio for stunning effects. Place sun loving plants in a nice sunny spot but be careful to water them often as containers can quickly dry out. You can group containers together either using similar sizes and colours or making a group with a variety of sizes.

Be creative when choosing parts and plans in place them in attractive positions around your garden and home. Container gardening is very easy even for a beginner gardener and your hard work will certainly pay off in a more attractive and welcoming home.
